Self-Publisher Interview with

Bobbie Jean Murphy

1. What can you tell me about your experience as a writer?

As a writer, I've come to understand that the journey is a rollercoaster of highs and frustrating lows. You will have days when words flow so effortlessly and ideas fly like fireworks. However, I believe every writer has periods where self-doubt takes over or the dreaded writer's block puts a whooping on you. It’s during these challenging times that you have to learn the true importance of perseverance. Also, it’s important to treat everyone with kindness and respect. I feel it is so easy for people to get caught up in the chaos, so don't fall prey into that trap.

2. What made you decide to write a book?

From a young age, I always loved crafting stories. Growing up without a support system meant that my writing became my refuge. I never truly felt or thought I was good enough or smart enough to write a book and have it published. I still am faced with adversity and even loneliness so the act of writing helps me transform my struggles into something empowering and it gives me my own identity,

3. What circumstances brought you to the decision to self-publish your book?

I chose self-publishing because it empowered me to take control of my dreams for the first time in my life.

4. What has your experience as a self-publisher been like?

It has been hard and challenging for the most part. Stepping outside my comfort zone has been a difficult journey. I want to be kind and spread love to everyone but sadly a lot of people will take advantage of that. However, I have also been blessed to meet a lot of wonderful people at the same time.

 5. How do you respond to the negative stigma attached to self-publishing and self-published books?

I think both are noble ways to go. Self-publishing is not for everyone. It’s a hard road to go down. You are pretty much on your own putting yourself out to the world with nobody really advising you.

6. What is one very important lesson you have learned as a self-publisher so far?

Trust your gut. Not everyone is your friend. People will take advantage of your kindness, don't let that knock you down, learn from it. Never stop believing in yourself. You will have moments when nobody buys a book for months at a time, but keep pushing forward. Also, good editing is important, and never be scared to ask questions.

7. What do you know now about self-publishing that you wish you knew at the beginning?

Make sure you love your cover. Don't overpay for covers and editing and always shop around and check for references.

8. A lot of authors of self-published books have reservations about promoting and marketing their book. Some even feel that it is a form of vanity or self-importance. What is your opinion about this?

Always promote yourself along with your fellow authors. It is your job as a writer to get as many eyes on your work as possible. Never allow anyone to take your goals and dreams away from you. Be proud of your work.

9. How do you promote your books and what form of book promotion has worked the best for you?

I promote my books through all social media platforms. I also donate my books to libraries. Giveaways are always fun and a good way to get people's attention.

10. What are some other important things you have learned as a self-publisher?

You will mess up; just learn from it. Also, support other authors. Ask a million questions as needed. Treat everyone with kindness.

11. Do you feel that self-publishing is a viable choice for other authors?

Self-publishing is a harder road to travel. You are on your own getting your work seen. You have a lot of highs and lows in self-publishing. You are not going to sell a million books overnight, but if you are doing it for the love of storytelling, it’s worth it.

12. How do you feel that self-publishing their books has helped many unknown authors finally get the recognition their books deserve?

I think it helps because you are free to go to those small bookstores and small hometown events to promote your own work on your own terms.
